A training event is being held for disaster preparedness at Sampson County Senior Services in Clinton this August.
People will be taught about key emergency planning skills to implement ahead of a disaster. The educational event includes information on what to do during power outages, severe weather or hurricanes, among other emergency situations.
The NC State Cooperative Extension and Ready NC are sponsoring the free, two-hour event.
According to North Carolina Emergency Management, seniors are advised to stay in communication with their social support network, make lists of emergency contacts and medical information, keep any medicine or medical supplies ready and engage in self-advocacy about one’s medical needs through written or verbal communication.
People of all ages can also plan for disasters by creating emergency kits. These contain important items one might need during an emergency, including flashlights, extra batteries, and up to a week of non-perishable food and water for each person and pet in the home.
Household emergency plans are also important to put in place in case of a disaster. For instance, each family member may create a contact card with information about others in the family to keep on their person, like a purse or wallet.
