Early history and the Lincoln connection
Clinton dates back to the 1770s, and was known then as Surratt’s Villa. The settlement was a small crossroads with only a few buildings. In 1852, John and Mary Surratt moved to the community. John Surratt recognized that the location of their house would be good for business. He transformed the structure into a tavern and dining room, and rented out parts of the upper story for sleeping, at 25 cents per night. A blacksmith and livery stable opened nearby, and the tavern had become a community center by 1854. The town became known as Surrattsville.
When the name Surratt became linked to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, the town’s name was changed to Robeysville. In 1879, the name was changed again, to the current moniker of Clinton.
This vital part of American history is managed by the Surratt House Museum as part of Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation. Museum officials can help visitors understand the house’s history by working with brochure printers to create a booklet about it.

Clinton today
