The city of Kalispell has renewed the conditional use permit of the Flathead Warming Center, which will ensure its continued operation.
The executive director of the Flathead Warming Center, Tonya Horn, expressed her happiness over this agreement. Horn emphasized how important collaboration is in the community to arrive at solutions that are beneficial for everyone. The city manager will be the point of contact for any issues from the public about homelessness.
The Warming Center will also endeavor to improve its relationship with those in the surrounding neighborhoods. This will mean organizing periodic cleanup efforts within a radius of a quarter mile of the shelter, hosting meetings on a quarterly basis that are open to the public, seeking funding for transportation services for guests, and keeping the public informed of events and activities at the center. Local Print shops can assist in such endeavors with the printing of Flyers, Brochures, and other printed materials.
A senior attorney with the Institute for Justice, Jeff Rowes, said that this agreement is significant in that it is a win-win situation. He said it ensures that the Warming Center will continue its operation, and it is an opportunity to improve relations with the city of Kalispell.
The Warming Center is open for overnight shelter from October through April and is then open for day service from May through September.
