The annual Hawk Watch Program of Glacier National Park will be held next week and in mid-September. Residents of nearby Kalispell might be interested in this special and unique program.
The session in August will be held in the Community Building in West Glacier. This training will provide an in-depth introduction to the identification, migration, and ecology of raptors and how to conduct migration counts at the sites at Mount Brown Hawk Watch and Lake McDonald in September and October. Attendees will be able to hike to a migration point and count the migrating raptors just below the lookout at Mount Brown, joined by raptor migration counters who are trained in the subject.
The September session will be held in the field for those interested in participating in the Hawk Watch at Lake MacDonald. This session will take place in the parking lot at Jammer Joe next to Lake McDonald Lodge.
In both sessions, attendees will learn how to identify and count migrating raptors from park biologists who will also share information about the role of raptors in the ecosystem, explain why the program was started, and answer additional questions.
The upcoming session will be next Tuesday, August 26 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, while the session next month will be on Monday, September 22 from noon to 4:00 pm. Poster printing is often used to promote such unique and special programs throughout a region.
