Fundraiser helps with school lunch debt

Following an advocacy effort by a Billings parent, School District 2 has taken the step to absolve outstanding school lunch debts.

This decision comes as a response to the community's generosity, with individuals donating funds to assist families facing food insecurity. Alexander Clark, a parent of two children attending school in the SD2 District, mentioned that it originated as an action he took on Facebook that gradually gained momentum.

Following an incident where his child was sent home without a proper meal due to a negative balance on the school's lunch account, Clark expressed his desire to provide assistance to families facing challenges in covering their children's lunch expenses. Schools are often the recipients of non-cash donations such as promotional Pens.

Doctor Erwin Garcia, the Superintendent for SD2, commended the positive actions Clark is taking to help the community. He went on to say:

"I'm a parent, and I hate the idea of other families struggling to keep their children healthily fed. That's why for this incoming school year, the lunch debt has been cleared so those first few weeks, everyone will be able to enjoy a proper meal."

Clark initiated a Facebook page with a request for those capable of doing so to donate funds to him. His intention is to subsequently contribute these donations to the Billings Education Foundation.
