State robotics competition top prize goes to Columbia boy

The Wonder League Robotics Competition, a national contest designed to focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education among children ages 5 to 11, has selected eight-year-old Blake Bukowsky of Columbia as the representative from Missouri.

Blake’s video of Wonder League Robots Dot and Dash performing a variety of preprogrammed tasks beat out more than 1,000 other teams from the state.

Blake was allowed to use the two robots, a 10-by-10 foot grid, disposable cups and an iPad to program his robots to complete specific missions complete with his own coding explanation. Each mission became more and more difficult until they had completed a total of six in perfect form.

Blake said:

“I thought it would be easy to complete six missions, but it was way harder than I thought. But I was glad I kept going. When I found out I got first place in Missouri, I was so happy.”

Thanks to his state competition win, Blake is now ranked 22nd out of 50 other finalists, with the national first place winner winning a trip to Silicon Valley to tour STEM sites, meeting Google developers and the creators of EA’s Minions.

Blake says he plans to keep competing in robotics competitions, and hopes to someday attend the University of Missouri’s Engineering School.
