Columbia’s budding beekeepers, and those who are just curious about the practice of managing a hive in a home garden, are welcome to be part of a deep dive into the basics of small-scale apiculture.
The community will be hosting a Beginning Beekeeping class where no previous experience is required. It will be offered at 920 East Campus Drive, and its syllabus covers a variety of topics.
Learners in the workshop will discover the basics of bee biology, including their diseases, pests, and how to prevent them. The equipment needed for successful beekeeping, such as suitable clothing, is on the agenda, and everyone will get some hands-on hive bundling experience by helping to construct two on site. They will find out how to choose the best location on their property to place a home of these industrious insects, and tips for sourcing bees will be shared as well.
To help the students learn as much as possible, everyone will receive a Beekeeping Book as well as an annual membership in the Boone Regional Beekeepers Association. Snacks and lunch are also included, and there will be prize draws for Promotional Products and other items, including a completely assembled hive.
Tickets for this introduction to the ancient art of apiculture are on offer for $80 each, and a discount is available for those who buy them as a couple. It will run from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm on Saturday, January 24.
