Columbia workshop offers chicken flock talk

Columbia residents who are curious about keeping a flock of backyard chickens may want to save the date for a local workshop that will show how easy it can be to raise these feathered friends.

Columbia city by-laws allow property owners to keep up to six hens, so long as they are kept contained by a fence. More people are finding out how fun and easy it can be to do so, and the class may make it simple to get started.

The presentation will be led by a member of the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture (CCUA), and it will discuss aspects of raising backyard chickens. The audience will learn how to set up a coop in advance, how to choose the right breed for a particular location, and tips for biosecurity will be shared as well. They will find out how even a small flock can provide lots of fresh eggs, and the function is part of the larger Dig Into Learning garden workshop series.

While a class, workshop or other session may relay a lot of information, the attendees may want to keep on learning even after one has drawn to a close. Organizers often have materials prepared by Stationery printers to distribute that include details not covered during an event.

This chance for Columbia to enjoy some “flock talk” is scheduled for February 21st. It’s scheduled for the Daniel Boone Regional Library.
