First responder service dogs provide a variety of services for their human partners, but they can sometimes become injured while performing their duties. Those who work with these K9 units and want to be sure they can provide them with emergency care have been offered the opportunity to take a seat in an upcoming training session planned in Columbia.
The class is intended for emergency services professionals who work with K9 units as part of their daily duties. This instruction will be provided by a vet who is fully trained in tactical animal care.
The students will learn actionable steps they can take to ensure they are well prepared should an emergency occur. They will be taught how to construct a K9 medical kit and how to handle an animal that has been injured so that the risk is minimized to both the dog and their handler. Canine CPR, bleeding, keeping the dog’s airway clear, trauma, fracture, and footpad injuries will be among the topics on the agenda.
While the participants may bring along their dog should they wish to do so, this is not a requirement. Canine first aid kits will be available for purchase at cost, and their contents will be specifically made to use with dogs. A printing services provider can utilize graphic design techniques to create labeling and other materials that may be used when putting together items like these.
May 22 will be the date for this learning opportunity, and it will begin at 8:00 am. The Columbia Police Department’s Regional Training center will be the location.
