Speaking in public is something people of all ages find difficult, but Columbia’s Services for Independent Living has created an initiative that may make it easier for young people.
The organization is offering spaces in its online Cat Chat program, and there are four slots available. Each will last for approximately 15 minutes, and they will be taking place on the Zoom video call platform.
Those who register for the activity will be asked to give a brief presentation about their cat, or if they do not have one, they are welcome to “borrow” a furry friend from a friend or family member. The sessions will be facilitated by Kim Kraus, who is the group’s Youth Program Specialist. Creativity is strongly encouraged, and the participants are welcome to include drawings, costumes or even the cat himself/herself, if not camera shy. It is recommended that they rehearse before their allotted time.
Hosting an event like this gives young people a way of practicing their social skills even if they cannot get together in person. Printed certificates can be presented to each person who takes part, and these can be designed by local Stationery printers.
