Boone County is opening up a new Emergency Communication Center in Columbia and is putting out a call for job applicants.
The new center will be opening in a few months and will need additional staff to handle the expanded operations. Telecommunicators will be starting at a salary of just over $15 an hour.
The county could benefit from promotional items and Posters to notify the general public about the new center. The items could promote the need to hire locals, as well as notify residents of the grand opening scheduled for September 11.
The current location for the 911 center is moving to the new location at 2121 County Drive towards the end of the summer. The new site will require 49 telecommunicaters to handle the 911 calls coming into the center. Boone county voters passed a 3/8-cent tax increase back in 2013 to help fund the new location. The cost of this expansion relocation is several million, which includes the new facility and the new technology to help support its operations.
Training will be required for new candidates provided by the Center. The county plans to have both the old and new operations running during the relocation to ensure a smooth transition. Employees will be trained on the new system in advance of the transition.
The new location will add an additional 13 workstations to allow for the increased staff. The staffing will include call takers, dispatchers and even a few positions for IT workers who require unique skills to keep the equipment running smoothly.
