Girl Scout cookie program may crumble without help

A troop of Girl Scouts is seeking help from Princeton organizations to help subsidize their traditional cookie program.

Leader, DeNice Janssen told the Princeton Union-Eagle that the Ladies Auxillary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), an organization that contributes $2,000 annually to the Girl Scout’s cookie campaign, is discontinuing their pull-tab fundraising program. The VFW was shipping cookies to troops across the pond, and Janssen’s girls want to find new money to keep the shipments going.

U.S. troops have been receiving Girl Scout cookies ever since Janssen’s colleague, Denise Jorgensen, started sending them to her son while he was serving in the Army. Her son, Ben, commented that many soldiers never got packages from home, so Jorgensen recruited friends, family, and community members to donate and pack up items for people in the Armed Forces. Janssen brought the program to Princeton.

Several Princeton individuals, organizations, and service clubs have shown interest in funding the program, which does not include purchasing the cookies, those are donated by individuals and other supporters. Most of the funds, which breaks down to approximately $200 a month over a 10-month program, will be used to ship the cookies. Each box is sent with a note just to let each man or woman serving overseas know that their Girl Scout cookies came from Princeton. Local Print companies are the ideal place to go to when looking for postcard printing or flyer printing to advertise such an important cause, letting Americans overseas know that folks at home are thinking of them.
