Fairmont classes to make old chairs new again

Reupholstering or re-canning can bring new life to an old chair, while at the same time, helping to reduce the waste that ends up in local landfills.

A series of evening courses will teach residents of Fairmont simple techniques they can use to take their furniture from weathered to wow, and all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

The classes will include instruction in both reupholstering and re-canning as well as other techniques needed to complete the selected project. The students are asked to bring a small chair to the first session that they would like to work on, and fabrics and other supplies will be provided.

Those who participate in the learning sessions will be taught the techniques that are often used in furniture repair. These include measuring fabrics, cutting, repairing the frame, tying springs, padding repair and how to use the selected materials to recover a chair.

Anyone who is interested in discovering how to re-cane a piece will learn how to use both pre-woven and strand by strand natural rattan. The method used will be determined during the first class, and after this, the required supplies will be ordered. Classes like this can be very popular, and materials from a flyer printing company can help to spread the word about it to the community.

These furniture restoration classes are set to kick off on April 4th. They will be offered at Granada Alice Barnes Upholstery, and only six spots are available.
