Edina to celebrate Lunar New Year

The Edina Asian American Alliance will be holding its annual Lunar New Year Celebration this weekend, highlighting Asian culture during the traditional celebration.

The festivities will include participatory activities like art, calligraphy, and origami. Visitors can sample Asian food from local vendors Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, Weiwe Tasty Healthy Dumplings, and Yangtze Restaurant. The celebration will include a performance intermission, featuring performances by the Hong De Wu Guan Lion Dancers, Middle School Chinese Choir, and Youth Lion Parade.

The celebration will also incorporate local student and youth organizations, including the Edina High School’s Asian American Pacific Islander Student Union, Chinese Club, and Black Student Union. Concord Elementary School teacher Nguyen Dang will receive an award for the AAPI Educator of the Year. The EAAA also promotes annual celebrations for its anniversary, the fourth of July, and Diwali.

Visitors can take part in games created by the AAPI Student Union and purchase Taiwanese deserts by Zoe Liu. This will be the third such celebration, ushering in the Year of the Horse, and it aims to bring the community together. Inspired by traditions in East Asian countries like China and Vietnam, Lunar New Year celebrations are held around the world, often using colourful banner printing and costumes for decoration.

The 2026 Lunar New Year Celebration will take place at Edina High School this Saturday, February 28, beginning at 11:00 am.
