Retail group to hold candidates' forum this month

Buy Chanhassen, an organization seeking to encourage local retail, will hold a forum for municipal candidates during October.

Candidates running for both the mayorship and city council of the Minnesota city have been invited to address the public, including incumbent Mayor Denny Laufenberger.

Attendees will have half an hour to "meet and greet" with the candidates before a more formal discussion takes place at noon on the day. Candidates will answer questions submitted by members. Attendance requires a Buy Chanhassen membership or $15 at the door. In addition to its monthly luncheons, the organization holds events such as the annual ‘Night on the Town’ festival in order to promote local businesses.

By the time the forum comes round, the municipal campaigns will be fully underway ahead of the November 6 general election, with the usual Signs of campaigning like poster printing and brochure printing likely marking the city.

Mayor Laufenberger will face a field of three challengers: City Council member Elise Ryan, software engineer Balakrishna Chintaginjala, and 21-year-old student TJ Hart. There are two city council seats up for election, which will be contested between incumbent Dan Campion and challengers Bob Ayotte and Julia Coleman. In Chanhassen, mayors and councillors both serve four-year terms, with council seats becoming open on staggered years.

The forum will take place at Chanhassen's American Legion Hall around lunchtime on October 23.
