An upcoming show at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres celebrates the strong women who have made their mark on the arts.
Lori Dokken, a noted vocalist, arranger, and accompanist, is presenting “Shout, Sister Shout!” The show begins by saluting Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a songwriter, singer, and guitarist who was popular in the 1930s and 1940s. She was known for her gospel recordings on which she mixed electric guitar with spiritual lyrics. She was one of the first gospel musicians to cross over and gain popularity with rock and R&B audiences, and has been dubbed the “Godmother of rock and roll” and “the original soul sister.”
Starting with this pioneering artist, the show will move forward in time, featuring the works giants like Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin, Laga Gaga, Janis Ian, and more. In addition to music, the show will feature words from such writers as Coretta Scott King, Maya Angelous, and others.
The band presenting the material comprises some of the brightest stars in the Twin Cities area: vocalists Charmin Michelle, Rachel Holder, Joyann Parker, Anna Christy, and Judi Vinar, Ben Kelly on bass, drummer Nate Babbs, and Eden Bodnar, a local voiceover talent and actress handling the spoken word interludes. Lori Dokken is the show’s accompanist and vocalist as well as its producer.
The show is scheduled for June 8 in the Fireside Theatre at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Organizers of shows like this often use Posters, which they can order at Print shops, to publicize them.
