A bit of background...
The earliest settlers of European descent arrived in the area in the 1850s, but the town remained largely a small farming community until late in the 1960s. At that time, a mini-mall housing a hardware store, grocery, drug store, and restaurant was built; in addition, the village merged with the township surrounding it, creating the City of Chanhassen, and the population increased. It increased again thanks to Herb Bloomberg, a home builder who moved to the small city and opened a hardware and lumber store. Finally, late in the 1970s, Chanhassen started work on a plan to redevelop its industrial parks and down town area. These small steps all added up to the creation of the vibrant city that exists today.
Records of the past are kept by the Chanhassen Historical Society, which seeks to enhance residents' lives by collecting, interpreting, preserving, and sharing the community's history. Herb Bloomberg did more than move his lumber business to Chanhassen. Bloomberg loved live theater—Excelsior, Minnesota is home to his Old Log Theatre.
