Burnsville, Minnesota, is a suburb of Minneapolis that was first home to people of the Mdewakantonwan Dakota, who had permanent settlements here as early as the mid-1700s. Settlers of European descent who came later were mostly farmers from Ireland, Scotland, and Norway. Today, the community serves largely as a “bedroom community” for people who work in the city.
