Learn about bats near Burnsville

The ecological importance of bats will be highlighted in an upcoming special program in Bloomington, near Burnsville.

During International Bat Week, the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge’s Visitor Center will present the 2026 Minnesota Bat Festival.
The refuge was created in 1976 to sustain vital ecosystems for migratory waterfowl, aquatic life and other animals. It works to protect wildlife habitat and natural resources that are threatened by development.

The refuge includes a 70-mile stretch of water and land covering over 15,000 acres throughout both rural and urban areas.
In addition to preservation, the refuge provides the public with community programs such as the bat festival, other nature education, and a direct connection to nature.

Next month’s festival is free and will include activities for all ages. While planning is still in the works for this year, previous events have featured a bat cave, bat knowledge contest, crafts, costume contest and bat cave exploration.

The Minnesota Bat Festival will be held on October 31, 2026, from 10 am to 4 pm at the visitor center at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, 3815 American Boulevard East in Bloomington near Burnsville.
