Native plants to take pride of place at Burnsville

The community of Burnsville will once again be hosting an event that can help introduce local residents to the joys of native plant gardening.

The event will give people an opportunity to learn more about native plants from experts in the field, and they will also have a chance to purchase some to plant in their own home landscape. Grasses, flowers and other flora will be available for purchase, and a wide assortment of vendors will be on hand. It will be styled after a farmers’ market, an will be held rain or shine.

A Masters Gardener table will also be set up, as will displays from Burnsville Natural Resources Department and the Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District. Businesses and organizations that plan on participating in an event like this will often have Brochures prepared ahead of time to give to those who ask for more information.

Native plants offer several advantages. They are well adapted to the local climatic conditions, they offer disease and pest resistance, they provide food for bees and other pollinators and food and shelter for other wildlife, and they often require less care than introduced ornamentals.

The native plant market has been planned for May 20th in the parking lot located across from city hall. Everyone is welcome, but they are advised to arrive early in order to get the best selection possible.
