Burnsville residents asked to give buckthorn the boot

Buckthorn has become a nuisance in many parts in Burnsville, and a call has been put out to area residents to assist in bringing it under control.

To help make this as easy as possible, the city has set up special ‘buckthorn only” days at its composting facility throughout the month of October. There is no cost for city residents to drop off these specific plants that they have removed from their yards or other properties. Brochures can be utilized in situations such as this to help provide the public with information they can use to help control weeds and other unwanted species.

According to the city, almost any shaded area in the community that is not mowed or otherwise managed will see the growth of one of these small trees. Since it is an introduced species, it tends to outcompete native plants. It also has no animals or insects in the area that utilize it as a food source, so its growth can go on unchecked.

The city’s compost pile is located on Pleasant Avenue directly behind Dodge of Burnsville. It will be open to the public of buckthorn disposal only on October 1 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.
