Swords are appreciated as both weapons and works of art, and have been created for thousands of years. A Burnsville workshop will offer an introduction to the process of crafting a sword using techniques that hark back to the Bronze Age, and the planners hope it will be as educational as it is fun.
The class, which is scheduled to run for between five and six hours, will open with an overview of the history of sword making and other metallurgical practices and how they have evolved over time. After this, the hands-on portion of the activity will begin.
Each of the students in the workshop will be invited to choose a pattern from the available options, and after this, they will prepare a sand cast using this wooden model. This will be filled with molten aluminum which will be ground smooth and the handles will then be attached. Next, the learners will apply their maker’s mark and then it will be time to head for home, newly crafted sword in hand.
The registration fee for this event is $95, and this includes the instruction as well as the materials used. It is expected to be a sellout, and a flyer printing company will be able to craft professional quality marketing materials that can be helpful in promoting it to the public.
The date for the sword casting class will be July 8, and it will be offered at 5000 Kop Parkway in Prior Lake. It is open to learners age seven and up.
