Shelby Township updates major pedestrian crosswalks

New pedestrian crosswalks have been introduced in Shelby Township at critical intersections to improve safety for all users of the road and reduce pedestrian-related incidents.

Township Trustee Lisa Casali and the Shelby Township Sidewalk Committee were able to secure funds in the amount of $291,219 from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments as part of a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant. A match of 20% was provided by the townships in the amount of $72,000.

New pedestrian sidewalks will be introduced at the following:

• 21 Mile and 22 Mile Road Crosswalks, where these two crosswalks will improve the safety of access to the pedestrian bridges over the M-53 Expressway
• 24 Mile Road Crosswalk at Wolf Drive, which will provide safer access to the Shelby Township Library, the municipal campus, and Mae Stecker Park
• 25 Mile Road Crosswalk, which will offer safer access from the neighborhoods north of that road.

Local Print shops often assist with informing the community about such projects with Flyers, mailers, and other printed material.

At the new crossings, when a pedestrian initiates a desire to cross the street, there will be lights with white, intermittent, and rapid flashes. This notifies drivers that there are potential pedestrians in the crosswalk. Drivers need to proceed through the signal with caution, and pedestrians can cross when traffic conditions enable them to be able to do so.
