South Portland sessions to help build better vegetable beds

Even though fall may have made its appearance, savvy gardeners know it is never too soon to start planning for next year, and a South Portland area two-part workshop can help point the way to planting success.

Planning a great vegetable garden often starts the year before, and learners in the workshop will be introduced to some of the cultural considerations to take into account. It has a two-hour run time, and the venue for the activity will be the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center in Westbrook.

The presenter for the classes will begin by reviewing tips for soil preparation, and the use of cover crops and other green manure techniques will be discussed. The value of crop selection and rotation and how these can be used to prevent soil depletion are also on the syllabus. Seed starting, pest control, fertilizing, and other cultural concerns are all on the agenda, and harvesting the crop will wrap up the activity.

The presenter for the session will be Joel Leak, who is a local Master Gardener program graduate. Handouts for a learning activity or other event can be prepared by Stationery printers.

This jumpstart on the next horticultural year for local gardeners will begin at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, October 17, and it will continue the following Tuesday, October 24. The participation fee is $30 per person.
