What's Happening in South Portland, ME…

South Portland offers inside scoop on wastewater treatment

South Portland’s infrastructure helps to keep the community humming along, and a sneak peek will provide an inside view of how it operates.

The city of South Portland's Water Resource Protection Department has invited all to be part of an experiment that will explore what happens to wastewater after it has gone down the drain. It will be family friendly.

The activity will take place at the Wastewater Treatment Facility, 111 Waterman Drive, and the tour will be led by a staff member. Attendees will learn how the effluent is treated before it is released back into the environment, and information will also be provided about how this is an important step in protecting the environmental health of Casco Bay.

Running for two hours and scheduled for the evening, the activity will be the first in a series of open houses and information sessions. Subsequent ones will include information about the new Pearl Street Pump Station.

Residents of a community may appreciate the chance to learn how their local infrastructure functions. A brochure printing company can prepare informative materials to hand out to those who take part in an open house event.

This insight into the operations of South Portland's Wastewater Treatment Facility will be offered starting at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 13, and repeated on Saturday, November 8. The Pearl Street Pump Station information sessions will take place on dates in 2026.
