South Portland class to offer scoop on native seeds

Maine’s native plant species have evolved to survive growing conditions that can sometimes be quite harsh, and a South Portland area class will teach attendees how to successfully grow them from seeds.

Anyone who may be interested in adding native plants to their garden will find the Tidewater Farm and UMaine Cooperative Extension’s “Growing Native Plants from Seed” workshop to be quite helpful. It will provide knowledge and skills they can put to use in their own yards, with a registration fee based on a sliding scale.

The session will explore a variety of methods for planting, and the learners will discover how sowing native plant seeds outdoors in fall can help to break their dormancy, which may require an exposure to cold stratification.

Transplanting and keeping the seeds and seedlings safe from snacking wildlife will also be covered. Spring division is on the agenda too, and everyone will go home with two containers of seeds they have sown themselves.

A hands-on horticulture class can be rewarding for attendees. A gardener’s cheat sheet of tips, planting Journals, promotional Pens and other materials for an event can all be prepared by local printing services.

This introduction to successfully starting native plants from seeds will be offered on 10:00am on December 9. The farm is located at 200 Presumpscot Point Road.
