South Portland area workshop welcomes future basket weavers

Weaving techniques can be used to create baskets that are both beautiful and functional, and a hands-on class will teach South Portland residents the basics of the craft.

The participants in the four-hour session will be making a bowl-shaped basket, and they will be working with natural reeds that have been dyed by hand. The ticket price for the session is $75 each, and there will be various colors to choose from.

The activity will see the participants prepare a 4x4-inch base for their project, and twining will also be taught. They will trim their basket with a simple track rim, and the finished size of the piece will be two inches high and six and a half inches in diameter. Those who already have some basic experience will be able to work on a different item if they wish. The instructor for the afternoon will be Kimberley Harding, who is a member of the Northeast Basketmakers Guild.

Weaving can be a fun hobby that can be used to create functional works of art. Registration Forms, supply lists, waivers, and other printed materials for an activity can be provided for an event by local Print shops.

This introduction to the art of creating beautiful baskets will begin at 1:00 pm on April 13. The location is 105 Saint James Street in Portland.
