Location, location, location
South Portland is ideally located to make connections with air, land, rail, and sea transport services, and has thus grown to be a major industrial and retail hub. The city lies on Portland Harbor, and overlooks the islands of Casco Bay and the Portland skyline. Despite the name, however, South Portland was never part of the larger city.

The economic sectors include both retailing and heavy industry. The industrial side includes the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line, which brings oil to the city by the millions of barrels annually, accounting for a large part of the tonnage coming into the Port of Portland. In addition, New England's biggest railroad yard, Rigby Yard, is located here. Built in 1922 by the Portland Terminal Company, it still operates today, though it's now part of Pan Am Railways. Major technology companies such as Texas Instruments and ON Semiconductor have manufacturing plants here as well.
