Session to introduce benefits of native plants

Bees, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators add life and interest to a garden, and those who attend a South Portland area event will learn how to make them welcome.

Amy Witt, who is a Maine Master Naturalist, horticulturist, and founder of Earth Walkers, will be sharing her knowledge of native plant gardening. The session will introduce the public to these species and explain why they can be valuable additions to almost any garden.

The audience in the workshop will find out about the benefits of choosing native species. They are well adapted to local conditions, are usually resistant to pests and disease, and tend to require minimal care. They also provide food and shelter to insects, birds, bats and other pollinators, making them a valuable part of the area’s ecosystem. Witt will discuss 15 cultivars that make a good fit for most sizes of garden, and tickets to take a seat in the audience for the event are $48.00 each.

Those who attend a function like this often appreciate receiving lists of the species discussed, as well as care tips and other information. These can be crafted by local Print shops.

Gorham Middle school has made plans to host this horticultural learning opportunity on April 26. It is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm, and will wrap up at 8:00 pm.
