What's Happening in Jessup, MD…

Book festival to take place in Jessup area

The Frightreads Book Festival is taking place at the Howard County Fairgrounds this September.

The festival is intended to celebrate books in the horror, thriller, science fiction, fantasy and dystopian genres. It will feature author events, vendors, a small film festival and costume contests. Despite the horror theme, the festival is family-friendly and the organizers work to keep the scary elements to a comfortable level. The panel schedule is available on the festival website.

Tickets can either be purchased at the gate or in advance online. Including fees, general admission is $26.49 for Saturday, $21.24 for Sunday and $41.74 for the full weekend. Kids 12 and under can attend for free. VIP tickets and group packages are also available. VIP tickets include a swag bag, a shirt and early admission to the festival. Vendors often include promotional products in this type of gift bag.

Plenty of onsite parking will be available for those coming from Jessup and other towns in the area, and attendees traveling from farther away can reserve rooms at the DoubleTree Columbia at special festival rates. Many vendors will accept credit cards, but the organizers recommend bringing some cash. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

The Frightreads Book Festival will take place on Saturday, September 13, from 11 am to 6 pm and Sunday, September 14, from 12 pm to 6 pm.
