Tree program expands in Newburyport

The Friends of Newburyport Trees (FoNT) has begun the second phase of its Recognition Tree Sculpture program.

There are four future tree sculptures that have been approved by the Parks Commission. Bartlett Tree Care and Tomahawk Tree Services have removed bittersweet vines and invasive Norway maple trees to prepare for the second tree sculpture at the High Street underpass and the crossing at Washington Street. In the coming weeks, tree stumps will be ground and, in the spring, new shrubs, flowering trees, and perennials will be planted.

President of the Board of FoNT, Crispin Miller, said that those who donate $650 will enable his organization to purchase a tree of the donor’s choice for a street, plant it, and water it for two years. He added that a metal tag is also placed on the tree with an engraving as specified by the donor, and a stainless-steel leaf 10 inches in length is affixed to the Recognition Tree Sculpture in the city.

The Recognition Tree program was created in 2018. Crispin said that all the available spots have been filled on that sculpture which is why a second such sculpture is being created. News of such a donation can be made known throughout the community with flyer printing to help with fundraising and beautification efforts.

This second “Tree on the Wall” will be placed as part of an Arbor Day celebration in April.
