Special award given to Newburyport school resource officer

Kyle McElroy, a Newburyport Police School Resource Office (SRO) , has received a Public Service Award.

News of such awards is often made known throughout a school district and the entire community with poster printing.

McElroy has been recognized by Mayor Sean Reardon for diligent work and dedication to the schools in Newburyport. He is assigned to all the schools in the district and was nominated for the award by another officer in the department.

The yearbook of the Newburyport High School Class of 2024 was dedicated to SRO McElroy as a testament to his commitment to the school community and the safety of the pupils. Students call him “Officer Kyle” and said he always made everyone smile, made school a positive and welcoming space, and advocated for the safety of the students.

SRO McElroy has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Salem State University and was hired in 2016 as a Newburyport Police Officer. He has been an SRO since 2021.

Marshal Matthew Simons said that McElroy has been an asset to the community serving as the SRO. He added that being nominated by one of his peers highlights the teamwork that takes place in the department. He expressed his gratitude for the work of Officer McElroy and all the members of the department who made the schools in the district a top priority.
