Currently on display at the Newburyport Public Library is an exhibit of unique historical items to remember an active member of the Friends of the Library and former mayor of the city, Al Lavender.
Funds were raised by the Friends of the Library, beginning two years ago upon his untimely death. Among the items purchased by the organization were three works of beaded art created by Douglas W. Johnson of Newburyport, and several slides and photographs of the Newburyport Fire Department and of Urban Renewal captured by Robert Currier, who is the official photographer of the Department.
Print shops are often hired to create materials to promote such special exhibits throughout a community.
The works by Johnson are landscapes. One of these is called “Spring Library,” another is “Mt. T. Takes the Kids Sledding” (completed in 2015), and “Courthouse Tree” (1997), which is made with 91,000 glass seed beads.
There are 17 photographs taken by Currier of downtown Newburyport and of Urban Renewal in 1972, and 28 photographs of the Newburyport Fire Department. The latter feature some of the more famous fires in Newburyport, including the YMCA fire in 1987, the fire of the Greek Orthodox Church in 1983, and the fire of the Moseley Estate in 1979.
This is the final week to see the exhibit, with this Saturday, November 2, the closing date.
