The annual Amesbury PTO Science Fair is coming to Amesbury High School, just a short distance from Newburyport, at the end of this month.
The event is open to students in grades kindergarten through four who attend the Cashman and Amesbury Elementary Schools. According to Michelle Parsons, coordinator of the fair for the PTO, there are 100 students participating, with science demonstrations and experiments that include how to get rid of mold, erupting volcanoes, and the solar system.
Prior to the fair, each individual or team received a packet of information from the PTO that included the guidelines of the scientific method they needed to follow, a trifold poster board, and a journal book to keep records of the data they collected. They could use poster printing to provide explanations of the projects on which they are working.
The students will set up their demonstrations at 8:30 am. From 9:00 am until noon, they will have 10 to 15 minutes to present their project.
Judges will consist of a panel of parents, teachers, and members of the community including Amesbury School Committee member Peter Hoyt, Superintendent of Schools Gary Reese, Mayor Ken Gray, and representatives of the Police and Fire departments. Students in each grade will be awarded first, second, and third prizes, with the top prize being the Mad Scientist Award.
The Science Fair will be held this Saturday, February 27. Doors will be open to the public from noon to 2:00 pm.
