The Safe Routes to School project was recently unveiled to residents of Newburyport. This project plans to improve crosswalks and sidewalks along a part of High Street that is 0.36 miles in length to enable students to take their bikes or walk to school more safely.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation proposed the project in an effort to alleviate concerns about vehicle speed and high traffic volume along High Street, as well as concerns about parked cars obscuring sight lines, the widths of crosswalks and their conditions, and wheelchair ramps that have been non-compliant.
The project will include the reconstruction of sidewalks and adjusting four crosswalks to reduce pedestrian exposure to traffic with the installation of raised cobblestone islands in the crosswalks and flashing beacons that are activated by pedestrians. Speed bumps will be created to slow down traffic and curbs will be adjusted to open up sidelines at intersections and crosswalks. It is expected that once the project is completed that the street will be more functional and safer and be more pleasing in terms of the landscape and streetscape.
The project is expected to cost $1.2 million with 80 percent funded by the federal government and the rest by the state.
