Poem contest celebrates diverse submissions

The creative writing class at Newburyport High School held its annual Favorite Poem Project for the 13th consecutive year last weekend.

On Sunday, April 26, at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, a representative sample of submitted poems was chosen for a public reading.

This project is part of the National Favorite Poem Project started in 1997 by former United States Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky to share the enjoyment of poetry with the general public. He asked for favorite poems around the country and received 18,000 responses from people of different, ages, backgrounds, and regions.

Submissions, perhaps given extra gloss with the help of local printing companies, were encouraged from a wide range of people of all ages and authors, whether they are prominent or fledgling writers. Poems could be modern or old, and in native English or another language with an accompanying translation.

In addition to the selected poem, there needed to be a brief statement included as to why this poem has a personal meaning. A piece of information identifying the person who submitted it way necessary as well so as to ensure a varied group of poems and readers.

The Firehouse Center is following up on this with a search for play submissions as part of the New Works Festival 2016. Playwrights have until June 21 to put their stories together, and can learn more about how to enter on the venue’s website.
