Outdoor dining to return to Newburyport

Donna Holaday, mayor of Newburyport, has announced that expanded outdoor dining services will once again be offered in the city.

A grant of $260,000 has been given to the city by the state and some of those funds will be used to set up 11 parking spaces or parklets that will be converted into seating areas for outdoor dining. Rather than the Jersey barriers that were used last year, hand railings and planters will be used by restaurants to block off the various sections of seating. There will also be flooring so that the seating areas will be level with the sidewalk.

Local Print shops can get involved in such efforts in helping restaurants with Flyers and other materials that have weekly Menus and specials for outdoor dining.

Owners of restaurants will need to follow the same application process for funding as last year. They will need to fill out an application that is about a page and half long and a plan for socially distanced seating. The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission and the City Council will then review the applications.

Holaday said she is looking forward to outdoor dining being up and running again soon as it is something in which she has been interested for quite some time. Work on this outdoor dining should begin sometime this month.
