Plum Island Point was the site for the year-long celebration of Newburyport's 250th anniversary last Sunday, August 10, with live music, family activities, and an old-fashioned clambake.
As well as seaford, hot dogs, and hamburgers, local beer and wine were available from a cash bar. Mayor Donna Holday hosted the event and praised the town for reaching this remarkable birthday. Organizers said that there were more than 700 tickets available and it was a sold-out event.
The event was sponsored by the Newburyport Five Cent Savings Bank with additional support from Mill River Winery, Newburyport Brewing Company, Port City Sandwich Company, and Starboard Gallery.
The Mayor actively took part in the celebrations by giving a keynote address, participating in a water-drenching activity to raise money for a healthcare organization and cleaning up afterwards. She commented that everything went smoothly and many people told her they were glad that this official celebration was held, as it gave everyone the opportunity to get together and enjoy a good meal.
The Mayor also praised Alex Bradley, a college student from Newburyport, who had asked her if he could be an intern in her office during the summer and played a key role in the planning.
Flyer printing was used to announce the celebration and provide more details about its cost and where to purchase tickets.
