Newburyport to start new solar energy program

The second ‘Solarize Newburyport’ program will begin in the area next week.

The program is currently called Solarize Plus, and this year it will be expanded to include air-source heat pumps that can be used by small businesses and homeowners as renewable energy options.

The community solar coach for the city, Jo Ann Clemens, said that under the 2012 program, 46 residences and small businesses installed solar panels to generate electricity. Over 423 kilowatts of electrical capacity were generated from these panels and more than $100,000 in rebates and $400,000 in state and federal tax credits were given to the residents and businesses.

The use of air source heat pumps will be a pilot program, Clemens added. The recycling and energy manager of Newburyport, Molly Ettenborough, said the use of these heat pumps will provide an option for residents who do not qualify for the use of solar energy but still want to generate their own electricity to reduce heating and cooling costs.

The informational meeting about the new ‘Solarize Newburyport’ program will be held on Thursday September 14 at City Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. Those who are interested in the program have until January 2018 to apply.

Flyer printing companies could be used by cities like Newburyport to provide general information about such programs, as well as Booklets with more details about the application process.
