Newburyport to host special documentary film

A one-off screening of the documentary “Duty Free” will be presented by the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival later this month at the Screening Room on State Street.

The film is about the adventure of an elderly immigrant mother who loses her job as a housekeeper in a hotel. Her son documents her efforts to find work and the struggles of a life of economic insecurity, observing how this affects not just his mother but an entire demographic.

Executive director of the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival, Joanne Morris, said this is not only the story of the relationship between a son and his mother, but also that of looking for employment when at a later stage in life.

The local cultural councils of Salisbury, Amesbury, Newbury, West Newbury, and Newburyport, are supporting this program. Such organizations can also collaborate by working on poster printing and flyer printing to promote their films and other presentations.

The film will be shown for special one-time-only screening on Saturday, November 13 at 1:00 pm. Sian-Pierre Regis, the director, and his mother, Rebecca Danigelis, will be hosting a question-and-answer session with the audience after the film. Morris expressed he hopes that people will watch and share this movie with someone they deeply care about. It will be aired nationally on PBS at the end of the year.
