Newburyport starts year three of food program

The third year of the School Recovery Program of Nourishing the North Shore recently got underway in Newburyport.

The program consists of 10 members from the community who volunteer their time, meeting every Friday beginning at 12:30 pm at the YMCA. They then travel to several schools in the Newburyport School District, including the high school, to collect extra food, keeping it in cooler Bags.

They then bring the food to the Newbury Food Pantry, arriving around 2:15 pm. The coordinator of the program, Emilee Herrick, said the goal is to reduce the waste of food in Greater Newburyport and bring various resources together.

Herrick added that a lot of food was being thrown out at the end of the week and was found in landfills. As part of the program, the younger students are taught to save cheese sticks, apples, and other snacks that they may not want while the high school students often save prepared salads and sandwiches.

The pantry is then open from 3:00 until 5:00 pm with almost no food remaining at the end of the day. Joe Carper, a volunteer, said it is rewarding to see how grateful people are for the efforts of all those involved in the program.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create displays throughout the community so people in need can know where to find fresh food and other items.
