Newburyport receives funds for sustainability

A grant of $110,034 has been awarded to the city of Newburyport. From the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) of the state as part of the Green Communities Program of the Commonwealth, this funding is part of an initiative across the state to help its towns and cities find solutions of clean energy that will strengthen local economies and reduce energy costs in the long term.

Cities and towns need to meet five criteria to be designated as a Green Community under the Green Communities Act to receive funding. Financial support is given for renewable and energy efficient projects that further the goals of the designated communities and are also given to those cities and towns to continue their successful investment of funds in such projects.

News of such funding and their benefits for the community can be made known to residents and visitors with flyer printing.

An amount of $73,332 will be given to the Emma Andrews Library to develop energy efficient measures throughout the building. Energy efficient upgrades will also be carried out at the Nock Middle School, the Water Treatment Plant on Spring Lane, Fire Station Headquarters/Station 1, and Newburyport High School.

Mayor Sean Reardon expressed his thanks to the Healey-Driscoll administration for providing the city with this funding which will enable it to reach its goals of becoming a sustainable community for many years to come.
