Newburyport mayor revives summer shuttle

The Newburyport Summer Shuttle is now open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 4 to help residents and visitors get around the city during the busy summer months.

It is run by the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA). The bus starts at the Newburyport Commuter Rail Station and makes ten round trips every day, stopping at Plum Island Point, the Parker River Wildlife Refuge, and the Tannery Marketplace, among others. Those who want to ride the Summer Shuttle need to be on the same side of the street as the bus and wave to the bus driver.

President of the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, Ann Ormond, commented that this shuttle makes it easier for visitors from Boston to visit Newburyport. They can take the commuter rail to the city and then take the Summer Shuttle for going to historic and cultural sites, birding at Plum Island, and shopping and dining downtown. Local residents can also use it to help navigate through the busy streets of the city.

Brochures have been created about the Shuttle and are available in Newburyport and at various tourist locations in Boston. Select MBTA stations also have used poster printing to promote the Shuttle.

The Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the City of Newburyport, and the MVTRA are funding the Shuttle.
