Newburyport launches new trash program

The city of Newburyport is introducing a new program this month to support the waste reduction goals of the city and state.

As costs for the collection, transportation, and disposal of trash have increased by a combined 35% over the last year, the new waste management system of the city requires residents who exceed the weekly limit on trash to purchase orange overflow Bags. This initiative is like other programs in many cities and towns in Massachusetts, and will demonstrate the dedication of the city to minimizing its environmental footprint.

The details of the program are:

• There will be a limit of 64 gallons of trash a week, which is about five 13-gallon kitchen Bags
• Those who exceed this limit can purchase additional Bags for the overflow at a cost of $10 for a roll of five Bags
• The fee for the disposal stickers for bulk items will increase to $15

The overflow trash Bags and disposal stickers will be available at local stores including Shaw’s Market Basket, Black Duck Market, and Richdale.

More details about overflow trash programs will be sent out to residents with Postcards, which are often produced by local Print shops in cases like this. The city’s website will also be updated to keep residents informed.

Newburyport has supported initiatives to reduce waste for the past 10 years, including boosting recycling rates, cutting the generation of waste, and fostering community engagement.
