A graduate of the 2014 class at Newburyport High School and a 2018 graduate of Kenyon College, Colleen Moore, was recently named a Fulbright Scholar. Her research will be conducted in India.
Moore’s original plan was to study English at Kenyon, but her interest turned to history when she was unable to take a required course in English.
Her research will be at IIT Madras in Chennai, India where she will study Tamil oral history and folklore and the role of local bandits. Her research will look more closely at oral traditions and folk narratives, and the importance of bandits and local heroes in creating an identity in the Tamil culture.
Moore wanted to study this area of India in the south. Very few people study there, as the Taj Mahal, the capital, and other cultural symbols are in the northern part of the country.
Moore has previously been to Madurai in Tamil Nadu when she studied abroad during the fall semester of her junior year. Moore said that Chennai is where her host family has some other family members, and she also knows a few professors there, so she already has some connections in the area and knows some people.
Print shops can be used to create various printed materials about such Fulbright scholarships and the research that is undertaken.
