Newburyport was recently recognized by the local United States headquarters of the National Grid for surpassing goals that have been set through its Community Initiative program.
Several municipalities in Massachusetts are provided grants to become more energy efficient. National Grid provides natural gas and electricity services to Newburyport, Malden, Salisbury, Shirley, and Chelmsford. It started the Community Initiative program in Malden in 2013 and expanded it to include the remaining towns last year.
The program rewards communities where the number of home energy assessments that their residents conduct has increased, and where residents have also installed energy efficient measures such as air sealing and insulation. Goals are given to each community based on past participation, and they are also provided with training, outreach materials, and startup funding.
Newburyport exceeded insulation, audit, and hot water system goals. The town may be turning to local Print companies to Print Flyers and other materials informing residents of this recognition and of the grant it also received for a behavior-based school energy conservation program at the high school.
According to the president of National Grid, Massachusetts, Marcy Reed, the Community Initiative program enables communities in the state to work with National Grid so that residents may take advantage of programs that may not otherwise be available to them.
