Newburyport appoints new head of library

The next head librarian of the Newburyport Public Library will be Sara Kelso.

She will be the 12th head librarian and will be succeeding Giselle Stevens, who is retiring. Kelso is is currently holding the position of assistant head librarian, so will soon need to update her Business Cards.

Kelso has worked at libraries in Peabody and Amesbury and joined the Newburyport Public Library as its assistant head librarian in 2018. Her career as a librarian began in 2011 in Sherwood, Oregon when she became a library assistant.

In an email, Kelso said she had been fortunate to work for a mentor and visionary leader like Stevens, adding that Stevens is not only an incredible librarian but a role model for the community. She said that she hopes to continue the work Stevens has been able to do for the city over the past two decades, paying tribute to the talented staff at the library who are dedicated to serving the residents of Newburyport. Kelso expressed her gratitude in being part of such a team as they begin their journey together.

During the 2021 fiscal year, the Newburyport Public Library had over 10,000 active browsers and a circulation of over 272,000 materials. There are 18 people who work full-time and two part-time employees. Its operating budget is $1,444,978.
