New trail system to open in Newburyport

The Coastal Trails Coalition is working with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the towns of Newbury and Salisbury and the cities of Newburyport and Amesbury to build a system of trails that would connect the four communities.

The long-term goal is to have a public trail system that is 30 miles long. More significantly the Garrison Trail that is 1.8 miles long and runs over the Merrimack River by way of a bridge over Interstate 85 is expected to be opened by the end of September.

Jerry Klima, president and treasurer of the coalition, said that those using the trail will be able to go up and over the bridge. There will be a ramp so that people will have access to Maudslay State Park and Newburyport. Then the trail will continue along Interstate 495 and at the Park & Ride on Route 113 there will be another trailhead, where people can park and from which they can enter the trail. Print shops can be used to create maps of such trails and provide more information for those using such trails on parking and other amenities.

Kilma said that once the entire trail system is completed, these four cities and towns will be connected to the beaches and provide a network of 30 miles of trails that facilitate easy connection to each other.
