A Build-A-Bed Challenge recently took place between East Boston Savings Bank and The Cooperative Credit Unions Association.
Newburyport resident Charles Ciovacco joined his East Boston Saving Bank colleague David Lawson among a group of 40 volunteers, and the contest sought to determine which team could build more beds in a time frame of two hours. The goal was to build 40 beds.
Representatives from The Cooperative Credit Union Association included Workers Credit Union, MassMutual Federal Credit Union, Hanscom Federal Credit Union, and Metro Credit Union, as well as four other member credit unions in the area.
The Build-A-Bed Challenge is a way for A Bed for Every Child to raise awareness about its program. About 14% of all children grow up in poverty in Massachusetts, and a child’s education and development can be hindered by the lack of a good night’s sleep.
The challenge was a pilot project that will serve as the basis for bed-building projects in future. Executive Director of Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless Robyn Frost commented that it is an opportunity for people to roll up their sleeves, volunteer their time, and make a contribution to a worthy cause.
The program may also benefit from the assistance of a local printing company to promote what it does by creating Flyers and other materials about similar challenges.
