Students from Triton Regional Middle School, which serves students from Newbury, Newburyport, Salisbury, and Rowley, recently sported mismatched outfits and crazy hair as a fundraiser for the people of Puerto Rico who were victims for Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
The idea for the fundraiser was that of TJ Anderson, a social studies teacher, who wanted his seventh- and eighth-graders to look beyond their own world and decided that a fundraiser for hurricane relief would be a good venue.
Anderson worked with his colleagues to develop an eight-day event in which participants were required to donate a minimum of 50 cents. Each day had a different theme, so one day was crazy sock day, another was the crazy hair day, and another was a Boston sports jersey day. There was also a mismatch day where the student had the chance to wear whatever they wanted.
The fundraiser got off to a slow start, Anderson said, but picked up by the end of the eight days. In total, close to $1,400 was raised and the money was sent to United for Puerto Rico.
Although teachers made donations as did one parent, Anderson said that most of the money was raised by the students.
Students running these kinds of events might benefit from the use of Flyers to inform other students in the school about their fundraising efforts.
